The three main causes of the Haitian Revolution following:
•In the year of 1789, rumors of granted freedom by the king of France were spread to the slaves of Haiti, across the ocean. These rumors where proved false, evidently upsetting the slaves, as one would expect. At the same time, the "Petits Blancs" argued against the fact that there was discrimination. They identified with the third estate of France, and wanted interest rates to be lowered, in order to make paying debts easier.
•The "Petits Blancs" were fighting for independence. They believed that they were the oppressed people, rather than the slaves. The "Petits Blancs" thought that if they could become independent, power could be taken from the people of privilege to create a democracy. They later seized the city of Port-au-Prince in 1791. •The news of the French Revolution spread fast across Haiti. When people of colour and the "Petits Blancs" heard about other people fighting for their human rights, universal citizenship and fair government, they took part in fighting and revolting as well.
