1691- The Carib Indians, that were native to the island died out. The Indians were slaves for the Europeans that colonized the island, so when they died off, they brought Africans over to Saint Domingue to replace them. 1792- A previous rebellion had been led by Toussaint in the North, but by 1792, all of Haiti was rebelling, and outbreaks were occurring all over Saint Domingue. 1794- The Jacobin government ended slavery in all parts of French colonies in Haiti, and Toussaint became a french commander. Spanish colonies had not yet ended slavery, and rebel outbursts were still occurring at this time. 1800- At this time, all Europeans had not been allowed in Saint Domingue because the Spanish had still not ended slavery. However, in 1800, Toussaint had invited all Europeans back to restore order in the economy . 1862- Over half a century later, the government of the United States of America recognized Haiti as an independent country. To this day, Haiti still has no relation to Europe, or governments in North America.
Triggering Event
The triggering event of the Haitian revolution was in 1789 when people of colour were physically separated from the Europeans. All of the talk about racial equality and human rights in the French revolution let them believe they were inclined to have those as well (which they were). The slaves were always treated poorly, but when free people of colour (child of a European and a slave) were not allowed to have any say in the Government decisions and weren't allowed to live in certain areas, villages or even towns that were available when it came to the European people, that is when they finally decided to revolt.
